In addition to its speed, this system has a sharp display, nice build quality, a generous storage, and good port offerings. That said, it costs $5. Acer Aspire R 1. 4, and the size and weight are not ideal in this design. The R 1. 4 remains our Editors' Choice for its similar feature set and much lower price, but the Notebook 7 is a strong option if you can swing the cost and aren't bothered by an unwieldy convertible laptop. Design and Features. The Notebook 7 strongly resembles an Apple Mac. Book Pro in its design and color scheme. The body is all- silver aluminum with black keys. It's not the thinnest or lightest system at 0. HWD) and 5. 0. 1 pounds, but that's not unreasonable for a 1. The Aspire R 1. 4 isn't much thinner, but it is lighter at 0. The Notebook 7's weight may make you somewhat hesitant to carry it around or commute with it, though, since you'll definitely be aware of its presence in your bag compared with an ultraportable. Besides the R 1. 4, most convertible laptops have screens smaller than 1. Lenovo Yoga 9. 00. S and Toshiba Satellite Radius 1. Part of the reason convertibles tend to stay smaller is their tablet functionality. The Notebook 7's display rotates all the way back with the keyboard folding in behind. The keys lock as you fold to prevent accidental presses, as on most convertible systems, but holding a 1. R 1. 4 as we noted in our review, so imagine an exaggerated version for this larger laptop. The HP Spectre x. Notebook 7's screen size, and it's equally as unwieldy. An upside to the larger size, though, is the 1. The resolution is 1. TV and smartphone manufacturers out there. The picture quality is retained at wide viewing angles, and though the screen is a little reflective, it's not as pronounced as other screens, and avoids the dulling effect of a matte finish. Full HD is the standard at this price point—the R 1. Spectre x. 36. 0 1. Yoga 9. 00. S all have 1,9. Lenovo Yoga 9. 00 and the 4. K version of the Toshiba Satellite Radius 1. More digital screen space is very helpful for a 1. Build quality is strong here. There's one long hinge supporting the lid, which keeps things sturdier than two smaller hinges—especially important while you're flipping the screen back and forth. The touchpad, trimmed in reflective silver for a sharp look, is smooth and firm. The backlit keys are curved, which makes typing more comfortable, as does the well- balanced key travel. Storage is plentiful on the Notebook 7 Spin, with both a 1. GB solid- state drive (SSD) and a 1. TB hard drive on board. Most convertible laptops offer 1. GB or 2. 56. GB SSDs only, which is in part due to their generally smaller sizes, so the Notebook 7 has a big leg up here. Port offerings are varied, and the larger body doesn't limit options as much as a slimmer one. As such, you will find an Ethernet port on the left flank alongside an HDMI port, a USB 3. USB- C port (which supports charging and, with an optional adapter, 4. K display output). On the right, in addition to the Power button and Volume rocker, there are two USB 2. SD card slot. The system also features Bluetooth 4. Performance. The Notebook 7 is equipped with a 2. GHz Intel Core i. U processor, 1. 6GB of memory, and (perhaps most surprisingly) an Nvidia Ge. Force 9. 40. MX graphics card, which is far better than the integrated graphics seen in almost every convertible laptop. On the PCMark 8 Work Conventional productivity test, the Notebook 7 scored a category- leading 3,0. It also posted among the best results on the multimedia tests, beating out the Aspire R 1. Hand. Brake, Cine. Bench, and Photoshop tests. None of the aforementioned laptops were faster on Hand. Brake or scored higher on Cine. Bench, and only the Spectre x. Notebook 7's Photoshop time. See How We Test Laptops. Due to the discrete graphics card, the Notebook 7 was also at the top of the heap on the 3. D and gaming tests. On the 3. DMark Cloud Gate and Fire Strike Extreme tests, it scored 6,3. The Cloud Gate score isn't miles ahead of the competition—the Satellite Radius 1. R 1. 4 scored 5,4. Fire Strike test, where the next closest score (the Spectre 1. Notebook 7's. Its frame rates on the Heaven and Valley gaming tests sat just under and just above 3. We consider 3. 0fps smooth, and the other systems couldn't approach this number, meaning the Notebook 7 is your best bet among convertibles for gaming, albeit at lower settings than dedicated gaming laptops with superior graphics cards. The Notebook 7's battery lasted 9 hours, 4. It's not on the top end in this category—the Spectre 1. Yoga 9. 00. S each lasted 1. It's also worth noting that the laptop features fast charging, which means you can get hours of usage time from about half an hour of charging, and you'll reach a full charge much faster than with the competition. Conclusion. The Samsung Notebook 7 Spin is a very well- made convertible laptop with a sharp, vibrant display, a nice build, and the fastest performance in the category. Its quick speeds and valuable set of features make it useful for getting real work done, or for entertainment. The 1. 5- inch size, though, is a bit awkward, and it's the heaviest of these convertible laptops—portability is not a strong suit, but it will serve you well at home. It's reasonably priced for what it offers, but the Acer Aspire R 1. The Notebook 7 is all around faster, but that $5. R 1. 4's size is a little more appealing for this type of system. As such, the R 1. Editors' Choice midrange convertible laptop, but the Samsung Notebook 7 Spin is an attractive PC if you don't mind the added price and size.
